Review: The Outside

Review: The Outside by Laura Bickle (Hallowed Ones #2)

The Outside is the follow up book to The Hallowed Ones and it is no less suspenseful, no less captivating, and no less swoon worthy than it's predecessor. I literally tore through these books... and while I'm a fast reader, that wasn't the reason for my speeding through. I just couldn't put them down. When I started The Outside, I got all the way to chapter 15 before I felt like I could pause. I picked it up the following night and finished it. (You can read the review of The Hallowed Ones HERE

The series picks up where The Hallowed Ones left off. Katie and Alex are outside the gates of her sacred home for the first time and it's not a pretty scene. However, they've become quite skilled at ... hmm. "staking their prey" to stay alive. They're together in so many ways and Katie grows so much through this book that it makes me feel like I know her. Like REALLY know her. Katie makes the transformation from quite, reserved, Amish girl to a woman who stands up for herself, fights for what she believes in, and doesn't back down for anyone.

What can I say about Alex without completely spoiling the story? uhhh. He's amazing. I want him to be my partner in crime at the end of the world. He's chivalrous, he's caring, and his belief system laughs in the face of everything Katie believes in. However, he never throws it in her face or makes fun of her. I guess that's the anthropologist in him.

The characters in this book are SO real. Laura Bickle is an amazing storyteller that has the gift of captivating a reader until the very end. I asked Laura if we could pretty pretty pretty please (okay so I said it in a lot more words than that but you get the point) have a third book... even though there's really no reason for it. She wraps up the series well with The Outside... sorry I'm rambling... anyway, I asked her and she said it didn't look like it was in the cards. So before you ask, that's your answer. Now that's not to say it won't happen and MAN I HOPE IT DOES. Haven't read this series? Pick it up today. You won't be able to put it down... but it might make you sleep with the lights on. ;)

Synopsis:

After a plague of vampires is unleashed in the world, Katie is kicked out of her Amish community for her refusal to adhere to the new rules of survival. Now in exile, she enters an outside world of unspeakable violence with only her two “English” friends and a horse by her side. Together they seek answers and other survivors—but each sunset brings the threat of vampire attack, and each sunrise the threat of starvation.

And yet through this darkness come the shining ones: luminescent men and women with the power to deflect vampires and survive the night. But can these new people be trusted, and are they even people at all?

In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, it’s up to one Amish girl to save her family, her community, and the boy she loves . . . but what will she be asked to leave behind in return?
